SUMMARY

This dialogue addressed the relationship between phenomenology and architecture. It described what phenomenology is, what its core conceptual tenets are, and how and why architecture has historically had a uniquely close relationship with phenomenology. The dialogue focused in particular on the period between 1960 and 1980, during which phenomenology rose to prominence as a mode of architectural discourse. It addressed the various uses and abuses of phenomenology during this period and considered its persistence today, as well as its contemporary relevance and future prospects.

BIOGRAPHY

Stylianos (Stelios) Giamarelos is an associate professor at UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture.

Matthew Allen is a senior lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis.

André Patrão is an assistant professor at Emory University.

Joseph Bedford is an associate professor at Virginia Tech.
