Learning from Levittown
Dialogue
SUMMARY
Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s “Learning from Levittown” studio followed their 1972 “Learning from Las Vegas” studio but is less well known. Situated within the context of consumer culture and the expansion of suburbia, the studio asked students why this form of housing had been overlooked and how it drew upon popular culture through signs and media, particularly through an investigation of representations of the house in film, television, and advertising.
This dialogue revisited the studio’s pedagogy and methods, asking about the status of suburbia and single-family housing, the relationship between architecture and class politics, why the studio has been overlooked, and how it was received at the time.
