SUMMARY

This interview of Michael Speaks details his intellectual journey from a middle-class upbringing in Mississippi to becoming a leading figure in architectural theory. Originally a literature student, he was introduced to continental theory while in Nebraska before moving to Duke University to study under Fredric Jameson. At Duke, Speaks participated in a unique literature program that prioritized the study of theory and philosophy over traditional objects of study, which eventually led him to focus on the politics of space, geography, and architecture. He reflects on the influential “theory moment” of the 1980s and 90s, his time working with Peter Eisenman in New York, and his interactions with avant-garde architects like Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas. Throughout the discussion, Speaks analyzes major shifts in academic paradigms.
