SUMMARY

Paper Architecture can be thought of as all the experiments, illustrations, statements, and lucid dreams that explore the potentials of our design tools, give tangible form to abstract ideas and desires, critique our real sociopolitical conditions, test the limits of the concepts and frameworks within which we produce our built environment, and offer openings to new architecture. Examples can be found in Piranesi’s convoluted staircases and Boullée’s massive spaces in the 18th century, as well as in 20th-century works such as Rem Koolhaas’s Exodus, Archigram’s Walking City, and Zaha Hadid’s paintings. The dialogue asked: How do we define such a broad and elusive idea as “paper architecture”? What forms has it taken throughout the centuries? And what role can it play in today’s built environment?
