The Materialist Turn in Architecture
Dialogue
SUMMARY
This dialogue addressed what might provisionally be called the “Materialist Turn” in architecture. The participants asked whether such a turn occurred and, if so, when and what evidence supports it. They discussed the characteristics of the materialist turn across design culture, history, and theory. They asked who the key protagonists were, which texts advanced this turn, and which projects and buildings exemplified it. Finally, they attempted to explain why such a turn occurred, what it means for the field, and how its consequences might be evaluated.
