Sarah Whiting
Biographical interview
SUMMARY
This interview traces Sarah Whiting’s early life in an academic, middle-class family with strong ties to literature and culture. At Yale, she created a self-directed major combining art history, history, philosophy, and architecture. After initially struggling to establish herself in architectural criticism, Whiting worked for Peter Eisenman, who shaped her understanding of architecture and encouraged her to pursue practice. She later joined Rem Koolhaas’s OMA in Rotterdam, deepening her attention to architectural materiality. Whiting then moved into academia, teaching at Harvard and Princeton while balancing her roles as a theorist, historian, and practitioner. She also discusses her editorial work and interdisciplinary contributions to architectural discourse, emphasizing the importance of close reading and patience in architectural education.
