Biographical interview
SUMMARY
Philip discusses his early work on art criticism and his interest in criticism as a form of writing at the outset of his scholarly career. He began by studying the Viennese critic Ludwig Hevesi and later examined criticism published in the Berlin Secession magazine Das Atelier. Throughout his own career, Philip has remained engaged in writing about architecture while it is still in the process of being made. He reflects on criticism as often the weakest part of the history–theory–criticism triad, yet also the part most in need of protection and support.
BIOGRAPHY
Philip Ursprung is an art historian specializing in late 20th- and 21st-century European and North American art and architecture. Active as a historian, critic, and curator, Ursprung has taught at the University of Zurich, Hochschule der Künste Berlin, Columbia University, and Barcelona Institute of Architecture. He is a professor of history of art and architecture at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he was dean of the department from 2017-19.
