Sarah Whiting
Biographical interview
SUMMARY
The interview traces Sarah Whiting’s early life in an academic, middle-class family with strong ties to literature and culture. She studied at Yale, crafting a self-directed major combining art history, history, philosophy, and architecture. After struggling to enter architecture criticism, she worked for Peter Eisenman, who shaped her architectural understanding and encouraged her practice. She later joined Rem Koolhaas’s OMA in Rotterdam, deepening her attention to the materiality of architecture. Whiting transitioned into academia, teaching at Harvard and Princeton, balancing roles as theorist, historian, and practitioner. She contributed significantly to architectural discourse through editorial work and fostering interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing the importance of close reading and patience in architectural education.
