SUMMARY

This dialogue analyzed the impact of Hannah Arendt’s thinking on architecture. Although Arendt never wrote directly about architecture, her writings have been immensely influential in architectural culture. For example, George Baird took up her concept of the “space of appearance,” and Kenneth Frampton engaged with her distinction between “labor,” “work,” and “action,” articulated in her book The Human Condition. The dialogue asked: What was the impact of Arendt’s ideas on architecture? How did they differ from the ideas of other philosophers whose work architects had engaged with until then? And why was the political character of her writing so important at that particular historical moment?
