SUMMARY

Published in 2011, Hal Foster’s book The Art-Architecture Complex posits that a “global style” of architecture has come to define contemporary culture. Focusing on Foster’s critical insights, this dialogue explored the intersection of art, architecture, and cultural power embodied in museum architecture in the late 20th century and the 21st century thus far. Key sites considered in examining this phenomenon included the former building of the American Folk Art Museum, DS+R’s MoMA expansion, Piano’s Whitney, and Zumthor’s LACMA.
